Just one week after the installation of Flock Safety license plate recognition cameras, the Mill Creek Police Department (MCPD) is already seeing powerful results. The system has generated multiple hits on stolen vehicles, resulting in the recovery of one stolen car and a stolen license plate — all within days of going live.

“We are encouraged to see the immediate impact the license plate readers have had,” said Stan White, Chief of the MCPD. "The real-time alerts allow our officers to act quickly and decisively. Recovering a stolen vehicle and license plate so soon after installation shows how effective this technology can be."

Flock Safety cameras scan license plates and compare them against national crime databases, information that has been available to officers in the field for decades via mobile data computers within police vehicles. When a match is found, officers receive immediate alerts, enabling them to respond rapidly. The system is designed with privacy in mind — it does not use facial recognition and focuses solely on vehicle-related data, which is provided to officers more efficiently and safely.

The installation is part of Mill Creek's broader initiative to reduce property crime and enhance community safety. Residents have expressed strong support for the program, noting an increase in confidence in local law enforcement's ability to respond to crime. City Manager Martin Yamamoto stated, "we're glad to see these results so quickly."

On August 16, 2025, at approximately 5:00 p.m., officers from the Mill Creek Police Department (MCPD) responded to reports of a shooting at the Swift Orange Line transit stop located in the 800 block of 164th Street SE.

Upon arrival, officers secured the scene and collected critical evidence that aided in the subsequent investigation. Through coordinated efforts and investigative work, Mill Creek Police identified five individuals—four juveniles and one adult—who were directly involved in the shooting. With the assistance of the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Violent Offenders Task Force, and the MCPD, all suspects have been taken into custody.

The suspects face multiple charges, including:

• Assault in the First Degree
• Malicious Mischief in the First and Second Degree
• Unlawful Transit Conduct
• Reckless Endangerment
• Unlawful Possession of a Firearm
• Resisting Arrest

"I would like to thank the MCPD Investigations Unit, especially Det. White, for their commitment to closing this case," said Chief Stan White. "I would also like to thank Sgt. Dill and the members of the Snohomish County Violent Offenders Task Force for their assistance and perseverance in apprehending the suspects."

The case has been forwarded to the Snohomish County Prosecutor's Office.

We’ve received reports of a disturbing scam targeting families of individuals recently booked into local jails. A caller—posing as a “Jail Sergeant”—claims the inmate is eligible for early release to attend a “motivational/behavioral change program.” They sound convincing, referencing real service programs and procedures.

Here’s the catch: The caller then asks for money to install a “monitoring device,” demanding payment via gift cards, peer-to-peer apps like Zelle or Venmo, or wire transfers using barcodes.

What to do: Hang up immediately, do NOT send money, report the scam to local law enforcement, and share this post to protect others.

The Mill Creek City Council met on September 23, 2025, in a hybrid meeting.

• Council conducted an Executive Session to consider the acquisition of real property.

• City Engineer Carmody led a discussion on Mid-Biennium Capital Improvement Plan updates.

MILL CREEK, WA. – On Tuesday, September 16, at approximately 10:30 p.m., the Mill Creek Police Department responded to a one-vehicle rollover collision in the 3700 block of 146th St SE.  Mill Creek officers arrived, and during their investigation, found that the vehicle had been traveling eastbound on 146th St SE when it failed to negotiate a corner. The driver was found to be under the influence and was arrested and booked into the Snohomish County jail.  No injuries were reported.
