MC City Council accepts commemorative ax
South County Fire held its first community open house at Station 76 in Mill Creek on Thursday, January 12. Residents and families met staff and learned about their extensive educational services. A highlight for many in attendance was the chance to climb inside the fire engine and see the equipment firefighters use daily.
South County Fire began providing fire and emergency medical services to the City of Mill Creek in December 2022. To commemorate the City's annexation into the Regional Fire Authority (RFA), South County Union Firefighters President Pat Moore presented a commemorative axe to Mayor Brian Holtzclaw and City officials at their regular City Council Meeting on Tuesday, January 10th.
City voters approved annexation into the RFA in April 2022. South County Fire has five firefighters assigned to station 76, providing 24/7 staffing, including one fire engine and a paramedic unit. Chief Thad Hovis said, "Your fire station is now part of a network of 15 neighborhood fire stations working together and backed by the resources of our regional fire and emergency medical service. We are honored to serve you and be part of the Mill Creek community."
South County Fire offers many community outreach programs, including home safety visits, falls prevention, and childhood injury prevention. They also provide free online classes, including ACT First Aid & CPR, Aging in Place, Child Car Seat Safety, Child Safety & CPR, Disaster Preparedness, Impact Teen Drivers, and Home Fire Safety.

A board of seven elected commissioners governs South County Fire: five commissioners are elected from districts of roughly equal populations, and two are elected at large.
Commissioners are responsible for defining the agency's long-term vision and for adopting the budget and policies to be implemented by administrative staff.
One benefit of Mill Creek's Annexation to South County Fire is that it allows Mill Creek Voters to participate in the election of commissioners. Mill Creek is represented by districts 4 & 5, with the district 4 position coming up for election in November 2023. This means citizens living within district 4 can run for this seat. Maps of the election district boundaries are available at South County Fire's website, www.southsnofire.org  For more information, contact Board of Commissioners Executive Assistant Melissa Blankenship, [email protected].
